Hair Oiling: Ancient Ritual, Modern Science

Rosemary + pumpkin seed oil outperformed minoxidil in a 6-month trial for thinning. Learn the weekly pre-wash ritual — how long to leave, how to wash out without stripping, and which carrier for low-porosity hair.

Hair

Hair oiling is thousands of years old — and modern trials keep validating it. A rosemary and pumpkin-seed blend matched minoxidil for density in a 6-month study on thinning hair, with zero prescription side effects.

Choose oil by porosity, not hype

Low-porosity hair (water beads up, slow to wet) loves light oils: grapeseed, sweet almond. High-porosity hair (soaks instantly, frizzes) needs heavier sealers: castor blended with coconut or olive. Fine hair should avoid pure castor — it is too heavy and hard to wash out.

The weekly pre-wash ritual

Section dry hair into four. Massage 1–2 teaspoons into the scalp with fingertips (not nails) for 5 minutes to boost circulation. Pull the remainder through mid-lengths to ends. Leave 1–2 hours — overnight only for very dry, coarse hair, and never on an irritated scalp.

Wash out without stripping

Apply shampoo to the oiled scalp BEFORE water touches it — shampoo binds oil better dry. Lather, rinse, then shampoo once more normally. Condition ends as usual. If roots still feel coated, a third light cleanse beats clarifying harshly.

What to expect and when

Shine improves in week one. Reduced shedding shows around week six. Density changes need 3–6 months of weekly consistency. Take baseline photos under the same light — progress is invisible day to day.

Pro tip

Add 3–4 drops of rosemary essential oil per tablespoon of carrier — never apply essential oil undiluted to the scalp.
